Poplar or Tulipwood, Awesome for Painted Trim

Poplar (the tulipwood variety) is technically a hardwood, with a density similar to walnut or cherry, ie not as hard as maple or oak. Its claim-to-fame, is its ability to be painted with no effort to seal the wood from sap bleed, … unlike white pine.  Its a joy to work with! At Lacasse we use truckloads of this species, to create quality paintable mouldings and interior Tongue & Groove  Siding… some whitewash it with regular water-based paints to create an interesting mottled affect and others spend time to create the perfect painted surface for a wood paneled effect.

It is not to be confused with its local cousin “Aspen”. The later is VERY white, compared to the greenish tinge you can see above for the tulipwood. At Lacasse we logged aspen for a number of years, until we finally gave up …. it likes to fuzz, and no mater what drying techniques used … it still likes to fuzz… so life has moved on and all Lacasse paintable mouldings, and shelving material are now made from the “American” or Tulip Poplar variety… it gives a  significantly better end result!

Notes: The poplar does stain beautifully as long as the colour selected is dark enough to hide the green tinge.  The Lacasse Showroom has both the whitewashed wood and dark stained material on display for you to check out… we also can get you scrap to play with at home.
