Now here was a fun project.
The client chose tigerwood flooring loving all the drama and flair that it implied. The tigerwood hardwood darkened to a rich orangy-brown with of course the dramatic black streaks throughout. The hard part, at least as far as the installer was concerned, was how to install the most dramatic pieces of flooring in the prime locations so they could be enjoyed on an ongoing basis :).. don’t want to waste them under the sofa! To keep the cost reasonable we built all the railing components and hardwood stair treads out of hard maple and then the client had them stained to match the undertones of the tigerwood floor.
For the sections of the handrail that were curved we sliced maple into thin 1/4″ x 5″ strips and these were clamped up and glued to match the arc of the steps. Wood spindles alternated with clusters of three black wrought iron spindles that complimented the dramatic stripping of the tigerwood flooring. Actually using the maple was a great decision because it softened the look and let the stripping in the floor create the drama against a more subdued railing.
To finish off the story we made up some flushmount tigerwood air vents out of the same wood so that it matched the flooring and kept the flow going. With our new CNC machinery we are now able to make wood air vents out of any type of wood and any size to meet your needs, both self rimming and flushmount.
